Explore the campus
We have deliberately sited our campus in the heart of the city - it is to the cities of Africa that most of our graduates will eventually be called.
1. 200 Pine Street: This is the first building that was bought by ESSA. Today the building houses three lecture venues, offices and Cluster Publications (a non-profit publisher administered by the Pietermaritzburg Cluster of Theological Institutions).
2. 194 Pine Street: This building houses several students.
3. 196 Pine Street: Here you can find the offices of Arocha, a Christian environmental organisation and additional student family housing.
4. Residence - Pine Flats: Most of the families and single female students on campus live in Pine Flats. Flats are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
5. Residence - The Palace: This residence is so named because its first student occupant said that it was like a palace when compared to the tiny house he had been staying in previously.
6. Recreation Centre: This building previously housed ESSA's urban mission programme. It now serves as a student recreation centre, housing a spread of sports and entertainment equipment. The SRC office is located in this centre.
7. Chapel: Students and staff gather once a week for chapel services, where students (as well as staff and guest speakers) are invited to preach and lead worship. The chapel served as a Lutheran church at the end of the 19th century and has been beautifully restored in recent years. The magnificent cross mounted on the rear wall is well worth a visit.
8. Phil Capp Centre: Named after our founding principal, this building is at present used as a residence, particularly for postgraduate students.
9. Corner shop: ESSA acquired this building during 2000. It previously functioned as a general store serving the local community, but since the closure of the shop, we have used the building for temporary student residence. It now hosts ECAP, the Evangelical Christian AIDS Programme, formerly ESSA's Christian Aids Programme, now an independent organisation doing some great work.
10. Residence - 14 Longmarket Street: This property has been re-roofed and renovated to house a number of single male students.
11. Residence - 187 Pine Street: This residence is currently used by two lecturers and their family.
12. Administration - 189 Pine Street: We took occupation of this building in 2000 after it had been re-roofed and renovated. The building houses our front reception office, finance, publicity, human resources, fundraising and the Principal's office. In addition, the entire community meets every day for morning tea on the back verandah at 189.
13. New library: This building has been demolished and makes for our new library. It's beautiful, but not visible in this picture.
14. 193 Pine Street: This beautifully renovated Victorian double-storied property houses the offices of our Registrar and several lecturers, as well as a board room.
