ECAP
ECAP was established in 1997 in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis that has developed in KwaZulu-Natal. The programme recognises that local churches are ideally placed to carry out training and provide support in both urban and rural areas. ECAP therefore focuses on training churches to carry out AIDS education and to provide support for AIDS patients and their families. ECAP gives visible expression to our commitment to the community and our contextual approach to theology.ECAP's aims are to
- Contribute to the reduction of incidences of HIV/AIDS and impact the sexual attitudes and practices of people living in the Pietermaritzburg area
- Equip local congregations in the Pietermaritzburg area to counsel and care for people with AIDS and their families.
- Ensure that ESSA graduates are trained to initiate programmes in HIV/AIDS in their ministries.
- Contribute towards the forming of an integrated strategy amongst HIV/AIDS organisations in Pietermaritzburg
PHASE 1
Once a local church has shown interest in being taken through ECAP's
phased programme, a series of training sessions are led by ECAP staff.
The initial sessions cover:
-
HIV/AIDS awareness through the use of interactive drama
-
Testimony by a Christian living with AIDS
-
Biblical and theological reflections on HIV/AIDS
-
Gender and AIDS
-
Life skills
-
Pre and Post HIV/AIDS test counselling
-
Introduction to home-based care
PHASE 2
Congregations that successfully complete the first phase of training
are then helped to initiate programmes that serve their own communities.
These programmes will ultimately be led by volunteers from within the
congregation who were recruited and received training during Phase 1.
